Edward Elgar The Music Makers

Saturday 22nd Feb 2020 9:45AM

Nottingham Harmonic Choir

Conductor Richard Laing

Soloist to be confirmed
Accompanist Jonathan Allsopp

‘We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams...’ Arthur O’Shaughnessy’s Ode expresses the thrill of excitement but also the isolation experienced by all creative artists. Elgar’s rapturous setting perfectly reflects the poem, with music of tremendous passion and beauty, often quoting many of his best-loved works, including Gerontius, the Enigma Variations, Sea Pictures, the Violin Concerto and the Symphonies. The Music Makers is not performed as often as it deserves, partly because O’Shaughnessy’s poetry has fallen out of fashion, so this is a wonderful opportunity to experience an unjustly neglected work. We will be joined by the acclaimed mezzo-soprano Julia Riley, and Nottingham Harmonic’s new accompanist, Jonny Allsopp for what promises to be a memorable and highly enjoyable day.
