What is your music background and how long have you been a member of The Nottingham Harmonic Choir?
I joined the choir in 2019 after leaving a career of over 20 years in teaching Music. I have sung in choirs since being at school / university and always enjoyed the experience, but as a first study clarinettist, never really thought of myself as a singer. Having the opportunity to train and sing with the fantastic musicians of the Harmonic is something I really value and I'm even starting to get the hang of some vocal techniques!
What drew you towards joining?
I joined the Harmonic because I love singing! I was keen to join a group that tackled ambitious repertoire and where I would be challenged musically. It was a bit nerve wracking to turn up at that first rehearsal but everyone is so kind and supportive that it is easy to settle in.
What do you love most about singing with the choir?
I love being part of performances and concerts of genuinely high quality. It is a real honour to share the stage with international soloists and instrumentalists and to be part of this fabulous choir!
What benefits do you get from being a member?
It's such a great escape. I love being able to get lost in the music, and the rehearsals are always made fun by Richard, our conductor. I also enjoy exploring the large chorus repertoire, it's a privilege to get to know these works at close hand and feel a part of something much bigger.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about joining us?
Come and give it a try. A few trial rehearsals will let you know whether it is the right choir for you and if you don't try it, you'll never know!
Vicky’s favourite music:
As a whole work, Mozart’s Requiem is a firm favourite but when we do our yearly performance of The Messiah, the Amen Chorus section of Worthy is the Lamb always gives me shivers down my spine!
