Name: Guy, Bass
Job: Musician and quiz writer/Verifier
What is your music background and how long have you been a member of The Nottingham Harmonic Choir?
I joined in 2010, then had a few years out when I was conducting Bingham Choral Society, then came straight back to Harmonic when I retired from Bingham. I was a Lay Clerk at Southwell Minster for 15 years, and now also sing in a chamber choir, church choir and a six-voice a capella group. For most of my adult life I have been teaching and conducting and not had enough time to sing. I am making up for it now!
What drew you towards joining?
I initially joined because I wanted to sing Belshazzar's Feast, but once I had joined and realised (a) how good the choir was and (b) what an excellent conductor Richard Laing is, I was hooked. I have sung under quite a lot of conductors - including some nationally known people - Richard is one of the best I have sung for.
What do you love most about singing with the choir?
I love big choir repertoire, but have not often had the chance to be involved with it since college. Being in a choir that can bring off Howell Hymnus Paradisi is a privilege.
What benefits do you get from being a member?
Singing for one of the best conductors I have ever sung with, singing great repertoire, some of which is new to me, and making lots of friends.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about joining us?
Give the choir a try. If you pass your audition you will not regret it!
What is your favourite piece of classical/choral music?
Hard one - Bach B Minor? Britten's War Requiem?
