What is your music background and how long have you been a member of The Nottingham Harmonic Choir?

No experience until my 40's when I started singing with the choir at church as an alto.  Then I joined Music for Everyone (singing with Daytime Voices and at choral weekends) and discovered that singing Tenor was so much more rewarding for me. I have been a member for 3 years.

What drew you towards joining?

I wanted more challenging and interesting music.  I knew several current and past members who spoke highly of the choir and I had been to some performances.  I was terrified of having to do an audition but was told that it was made as welcoming as possible.

What do you love most about singing with the choir?

The joy of singing each week in a large group of excellent singers and a brilliant conductor.  The friendliness of the other members.  And the excitement of the performances.

What benefits do you get from being a member?

For 2+ hours each Monday I feels totally absorbed by the music and can forget any things I want a break from.  Physically, I'm sure breathing and posture are improved.  Also, see above.

How was your experience of joining?

For my first rehearsal I went with a friend (singing a different part).  I felt welcomed by the other tenors.  I was reassured (to some extent) about the audition and found the experience much less threatening than I'd expected!  I now feel part of the choir and am interested in taking a more active role in the organisation.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about joining us?

I attended one of the Harmonic’s ‘Come and Sing’ days initially, which I think really helped me to get a flavour of the choir.  Otherwise, just come and try us out - no obligation.
