Name: Colin, Bass
Job: Civil Servant
What is your music background and how long have you been a member of The Nottingham Harmonic Choir?
In terms of my singing biography - I hated the weekly hymn practice when I was at primary school! But I joined a sixth form choir and then a small church choir. Joining the Harmonic followed and I have been in the choir for 30 years.
What drew you towards joining?
A relative was already a member. I had been to several Harmonic concerts and was impressed by the standard of the performances and wanted to be part of it.
What do you love most about singing with the choir?
Seeing good friends once a week! It’s great to learn new works (that are sometimes really challenging!) as well as singing works I already know and have performed before. Being part of a group of people who make such a glorious sound is incredibly special!
What benefits do you get from being a member?
I have quite a stressful job. Singing helps me unwind and forget about work pressures. And it just makes me feel good!
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about joining us?
Do it! Give us a try. I appreciate it might seem daunting but we’re a friendly, welcoming group and we’re always looking for new talent to nurture to help the choir continue to go from strength to strength.
What is your favourite piece of classical/choral music?
That’s almost impossible to answer; it’s like being asked to choose your favourite child! But If pushed, I’d have to say the Fauré requiem (that’s often performed with the Cantique de Jean Racine, so maybe have that as well please?!) And the first work I performed with the Harmonic, the Mozart requiem, will always have a special place in my heart.
