Following the appointment of Simon Bell as Assistant Director of Music at Winchester Cathedral The post of Accompanist to the Nottingham Harmonic Society has become vacant The Nottingham Harmonic Society, founded in 1856, is one of the country's leading choral societies, performing a wide range of choral works mainly in concerts which the Society promotes itself. The Society's choir currently contains nearly 200 members. The Society's season commences at the beginning of September, the first major concert being in November. This is followed before Christmas by an annual performance of Handel's Messiah and two popular carol concerts. There is a Spring concert in March, and the season usually ends with a concert out of Nottingham in the middle of May. There are occasionally additional engagements. All but the May concert are usually held in Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall. The forthcoming 2008-09 season's concerts will be conducted by the Society's newly appointed Music Director Murray Stewart. On occasions it is expected that a guest conductor will be engaged. The main duty of the Accompanist is to accompany on the piano, the weekly Monday night rehearsals. These take place between 6.45 and 9.00 pm, in the Castlegate Congregational Church, Nottingham. The Accompanist will be expected to support the Music Director in the training of the choir, including taking sectional rehearsals (usually the first half of a full rehearsal) when required, and on occasion deputising for the Music Director in his absence, at a full rehearsal. A proven competent rehearsal accompanist is required, and candidates should indicate their experience of choir training. Proficiency on the organ to recital standard and of harpsichord continuo playing could additionally lead to participation on those instruments in the orchestras engaged in the Society's concerts. A select short list of candidates will be invited to accompany a half-rehearsal and then a whole rehearsal before the appointment is made. A fee is paid for each rehearsal, and for concert engagements, determined by the Society's General Committee. The current rehearsal fees for the accompanist are as follows:
Accompanying rehearsals: £50
